Menn Ársins rehearsing and composing in Arnarholt in 2006 (@mennarsins)

I decided to dig out this old pictures since I'm going with Menn Ársins to this farm on the countryside to work on some new material and record some demos. I can hardly believe it's been 3 years. I didn't even have kids then! Now I have 2 boys! :-)

I had just recently joined the band at that time (November 2006). I hardly knew all their names and their phone numbers had not yet been stored in the mobile phone :-D

Here's a short recording from that weekend

That song/jam later turned into the song "Allt að gerast"

This is how it sounds like after we had jammed on it for a whole another year and recorded it, mixed and mastered!

Allt að gerast by Menn Ársins

Add another year ... and few months... this video is from the release concert last January.

I'm looking forward to start working on the new tunes... in fact we've already started.
Now we're just gonna focus a little harder :-)

Cheers!

demo nr. 4

Demo Nr. 4 by Sigurdór Guðmundsson   (6083 KB)
Listen on posterous

Rough demo I put togeather today.

Drum loops, acoustic guitar + electric bass.

The original drums were in 120 bpm but I slowed them down to 100 bpm... so that explains the strange sound :-p

Is the sound to dark/warm ? ... I'm totally getting tired by now :)

BBC Horizon - Why Do We Talk? (Part 1/6) (playlist)

"Talking is something that is unique to humans, yet it still remains a mystery. Horizon meets the scientists beginning to unlock the secrets of speech - including a father who is filming every second of his son's first three years in order to discover how we learn to talk, the autistic savant who can speak more than 20 languages, and the first scientist to identify a gene that makes speech possible.

Horizon also hears from the godfather of linguistics, Noam Chomsky, the first to suggest that our ability to talk is innate. A unique experiment shows how a new alien language can emerge in just one afternoon, in a bid to understand where language comes from and why it is the way it is."

The calm mouse takes the staircase with the 12 steps. To the liquor store... genius!

Calm Mouse (Live) by Amalgam   (10150 KB)
Listen on posterous

The song Calm Mouse was performed by the band Amalgam. The recording is an audience recording from a concert in Vejle, Denmark. (More songs from that concert here)

The horn arrangement was inspired from Chris Speed's tune "Staircase Genius". The bass part had also originally somehow been inspired by Skúli Sverrisson's approach on some of his material.... not that I can really pin point it.

Few years later the song evolves into a song called "12 Steps to the Liquor Store" by Menn Ársins.

Once upon a time in the east...

Thomas Dybdahl - Cecilia

Cecilia,
You didn't wanna give your heart away
You tear apart, angel eyes like bluebells
Trembling hearts, leave your empty shells
Cecilia
You didn't wanna give your heart away
Cecilia,
You didn't wanna leave it all behind
Here I am
Flesh and bones
Here I am
Flesh and bones
Did he touch you?
Shameful and disgraced?
Did he rob your joy of the embrace?
Cecilia,
You didn't wanna give your heart away
Cecilia,
You didn't wanna leave it all behind
Here I am
Flesh and bones
Here I am
Flesh and bones
Here I am
Flesh and bones
